Officers say the deputy was shot near the town of Dunnigan when he tried to pull over Marcos Antonio Topete on suspicion of drunk driving.
According to Capt. Robin Faille of the Yolo County Sheriffs Department the deputy was shot in the chest or shoulder and is in critical condition at Woodland Memorial Hospital. Captain Robin Faille said the deputy was wearing a bullet-proof vest, but it didn’t protect the area where he was hit.
According to Faille there was a baby in Marco Topete’s car at the time of the shooting, but the child is okay. Marco Topete is age 35 and is from Arbuckle. Faille also said Marco Topete is a parolee with a record of assault with a deadly weapon. As the search was taking place last night, authorites shut down the highway in Dunnigan causing traffic to back up for miles.
