Scott Baio recalls the nightmare of his baby girl Bailey DeLuca’s false test results. Scott Baio’s baby girl tested positive for a potentially fatal disorder called GA-1 just one day after she came home from the hospital last November — but the results turned out to be false and he baby is just fine.

Scott Baio’s baby daughter Bailey DeLuca was born last November. Scott and Renee Baio shared Bailey’s story yesterday. Scott Baio celebrated his first official Fathers Day with great relief. As a father myself I can tell you that Father’s Day is a great day when you have young children. But for Scott Baio and his wife Renee, every day spent with their 7-month-old daughter Bailey DeLuca is viewed as a blessing.

After being a bachelor in the public eye on his reality TV show, Scott Baio was set to marry Renee Sloan and also to become a father. In November 2007, Scott did become a father, to baby girl Bailey Deluca. When the Scott Baio’s baby girl was born in November 2007, she tested positive for a potentially fatal disorder just one day after she came home from the hospital — but luckily, the test result was false.

Tests showed Bailey DeLuca, who was premature, might have GA-1, a metabolic disorder that can cause seizures and lead to coma and death. Testing took 10 weeks, and when doctors told the couple Bailey was completely healthy, “we jumped through the ceiling,” Baio said.

What is GA-1?

GA-1 is an organic acid disorder that occurs when an enzyme called glutaryl-CoA dehydrogenase is either missing or not working properly. The GA-1 disorder occurs in 1 in every 40,000 babies. GA-1 causes episodes of severe illness called ‘metabolic crises’ and can lead to seizures, swelling of the brain, coma and even death if it is not anticipated and properly treated.

Bailey’s urine test came back negative for the disorder but her blood tests continued to show positive results, so the couple was instructed to have their 12-day-old daughter undergo an exceedingly painful 7-layer tissue test at the Children’s Hospital at UCLA.

I thanks God every day for my children so I can only imagine what Scott and Renee Baio were thinking while waiting for their daughter’s test results. I’m glad there was good news in the end and I hope that Scott and Renee always remember that their baby girl Bailey is a blessing.
